The Good Life Lodge, or Miyo Pim\u00e2tisiwinkamik, is a 30,000-square-foot youth wellness center on the Rocky Boy’s Reservation. Rocky Boy Health Center opened it on March 27, 2026, with health care, culture, sports and learning under one roof.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lodge sits near Box Elder in north-central Montana. It holds a clinic, a gym, a teaching kitchen, a garden and classrooms for art and technology, and the health center expects it to serve at least 1,000 children and young people a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those numbers are large for the Rocky Boy’s Reservation, home of the Chippewa Cree Tribe and about 122,000 acres in and around the Bears Paw Mountains, not far from the Canadian border. But the more interesting part of the story is how the lodge came to exist, and what it is being asked to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why was the Good Life Lodge built?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Residents asked for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project did not begin with a blueprint. According to Montana Public Radio<\/a>, it began about five years ago, when Rocky Boy Health Center asked residents what they wanted to see more of in their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answers kept pointing in one direction. A 2023 Community Health Assessment found that residents saw the lack of safe, youth-focused spaces as a top concern, according to the health center’s opening announcement, which Hi-Line Today<\/a> published in full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joel Rosette, the health center’s CEO, told MTPR that young people asked for “safe places to go to build community, to gather as community,” and that “their culture, their language, their history” mattered to them too. The survey, he said, was reassuring, “but it also exposed the gap of things we didn’t have.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hope itself is much older than the survey. Sean Havey, a project manager with McKinstry, the firm that designed and built the building’s mechanical and electrical systems, put it this way in the company’s project summary<\/a>: “The dream of having a youth center on the reservation began 30 years ago.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lodge combines things that usually live in separate buildings, often in separate towns. McKinstry’s summary lists integrated behavioral health, a health and dental clinic, a teaching kitchen, a permaculture garden, a space for processing wild game, a gym and sports courts, art and technology classrooms and a full commercial kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The health side is not an afterthought. Melody Henry, the health center’s director of strategic development, told KXLH<\/a> that the clinic will handle annual physicals “from prenatal to 18-year-olds,” with a focus on prevention and well-child care. The opening announcement adds mental health support, school-based care, dental screening and maternal health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there is the part that no clinic can provide on its own. Henry described a full cycle of traditional food skills: “We’ll show them how to hunt, bring the food back here, process it and then cook it. We have a garden. We want to grow our own food, cook our own food here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement also mentions regalia making, gardening, cooking and dancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Details that carry meaning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Henry said the design was intentional down to small things, “from the colors on the walls that represent ribbon skirts and ribbon shirts to historical photos in the medical clinic.” McKinstry also notes that artwork made by Chippewa Cree youth is featured throughout the building, and that young people gave direct input on how the space was shaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That matters. A building that young people helped design, and that shows their own work on its walls, sends a different message than one designed for them from far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is the Good Life Lodge heated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With geothermal energy. The building runs all-electric.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lodge sits hours from major population centers, and the site had no access to natural gas. McKinstry’s answer was a vertical closed-loop geothermal system: roughly 30 bores drilled about 400 feet into the ground, trading heat with the earth so the building stays warm in winter and cool in summer. The lodge runs all-electric, with LED lighting and high-efficiency ventilation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project team included Architecture 118 on design and Dick Anderson Construction as general contractor, with McKinstry handling mechanical, electrical and plumbing work as a design-build partner. The point of all that engineering is simple. Lower operating costs leave more of the budget for programs and staff, decade after decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
